One-Third D.C. Clergy Support Dixon

By Robert Stowe England

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Diocese of Washington has posted a list of 100
clergy resident or licensed in the diocese who support the actions of
Acting Bishop Jane Dixon in her dispute with Christ Church, Accokeek,
over the call of Fr. Samuel Edwards as its rector. As there were 322
clergy listed in the latest Diocesan Journal, this represents less than
one-third of the clergy in the diocese.

One hundred clergy signed on to a May 9 letter of support issued by the
Executive Board of the Washington Episcopal Clergy Association.
According to the diocese, "the letter affirmed the clergy's support in
[Dixon's] role as Ecclesiastical Authority in accord with the Canons of
the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, and on her principled
position to protect the polity and property of the Diocese."

Most signed the letter prior to the announcement of a lawsuit June 25
In the federal district court in Baltimore to seek the ouster of Fr.
Edwards from his position as rector of Christ Church, Accokeek, Md.

The failure of the diocese to obtain more support for the letter must
Be seen as somewhat of a vote of no confidence. All clergy had been
Sent extensive materials on the situation in Accokeek that were heavily
biased in favor of Dixon. Also, the diocese is able to bring much
pressure on clergy to support a given cause and, according to many
clergy, has not been hesitant to apply the screws in the last decade
under Bishop Ronald Haines and Jane Dixon.

A closer look at the list also reveals that it relies heavily on
Support from female clergy. About half of the names on the list - 49
names -- are women, representing the nearly all of the ordained women
in the diocese.

The list also contains names of prominent leaders in the gay
and lesbian wing of the diocese, including the Rev. Michael Hopkins,
president of Integrity, the gay and Lesbian lobby within the Episcopal
Church, and the Rev. Janice Robinson, rector of Grace Church, Silver
Spring, Md., who is rumored to be a favorite of the revisionists in the
diocese to become the next bishop.

The list contains several surprises, most particularly the Rev .Dr.
David Pollock of St. Bartholomew's, Laytonsnville, Md., and formerly
The rector of St. Luke's in Bethesda. He reportedly questioned Dixon's
rejection of the call of Fr. Edwards at a clergy meeting last spring.

The list also includes the Rev. Dr. Frank Wade, rector of St. Alban's,
who has criticized diocesan conventions for failing to allow a dialogue
on controversial sexuality issues. It also includes the Rev. Stuart
Kenworthy, rector of the moderately conservative Christ Church,
Georgetown, D.C.

The list also includes some names of conservatives from southern
Maryland that many will be surprised to see. It includes, for example,
the husband and wife team of the Rev. Christopher Halliday, rector of
St. George's, Valley Lee, Md., and the Rev. Paula Halliday, rector of
At. Andrew's, Leonardtown, Md. The two came to the diocese from
Ireland.

It also included the Rev. Dr. Samuel C. Walker, rector of Christ
Church, Chaptico, Md.

The list also includes the Very Rev. Nathan D. Baxter, dean of the
Washington Cathedral, as well as several other members of the staff,
including the Rev. Canon Barbara Duncan, the Rev. Canon Peter Grandell,
the Rev. Canon Eugene Sutton.

The list did include one priest who has identified himself as an
Anglo-Catholic, the Rev. Dr. Kirtley Yearwood, St. Mary's, Foggy
Bottom,

D.C. No other Anglo-Catholic name appeared on the list.
